Most people hearing the word “Yoga” think about classes, poses, stretching. The deeper one’s understanding becomes of this science, the more one realizes how much healing this holistic system really offers.
Yoga and Ayurveda (the art of seasonal, natural diet and lifestyle) are inseparable. In other words, practicing the asanas only is never enough.
As spring is just around the corner, Nature will cleanse itself from all the dense winter mud, and heavy, frozen energy, to allow movement and growth to start all around us. Let us become conscious creators of this process and connect to it. Here are a few tips:
1. Start in your surroundings. Spring cleaning of the house and yard is a common practice in our communities. I love the smell of fresh air in the house, the open windows, clean closets and roof. Let go of anything you haven't touched in the last 12 months.
2. Organize your work environment. Lighten the piles of paper, clean out the hard drive, purchase and place a living plant on your desk.
3. Free you mind and heal your heart:) Try a week long social media and screen fast. Schedule long walks outside instead and show up to your reignited love affair with Mother Nature. We live in Paradise in Campbell River.
4. Yes, this is the best time for a fast or diet. Please do it mindfully, supervision of a dietitian or nutritionist is always a good idea.
5. The lymph nodes in our body do not have pumps, (unlike the veins which have the heart as a pump). To detox our bodies, we need regular compression of the nodes, which is provided by most of the yoga asanas we learn. Practice 3-5 times a week at spring time and enjoy the new-found vitality yoga provides.
