The Yoga Development Course: A three-month intensive |
At certain points in my life I have felt a need to take time out from what sometimes seems like the perpetual motion of daily living, to find out what really matters to me and what is my life all about. I want to be somewhere away from my familiar routine and involvement with friends and family to have the time to turn inward and find stillness. I decided to give myself the gift of time.

In early January1992, and again in 2004, I set off for Yasodhara Ashram, a yoga retreat and study centre nestled on the shores of Kootenay Lake, to participate in the Yoga Development Course, a three-month intensive yoga course which reveals to me that yoga is so much more than stretching my body and holding poses/asanas.
I discovered that studying yoga, as it is taught at Yasodhara Ashram, is the study of myself. It is about finding out who I am at a deeper level, accessing the wisdom of my unconscious through the spiritual practices of yoga.
My experience was one of nurturance in an environment that requires no driving, no shopping, no need to carry keys, a wallet or purse and where delicious meals are lovingly prepared. There was time to be silent, experience contemplative walks in nature and sit reflecting in my journal by the window with a hot cup of tea. I recall starting the journey with some trepidation as to what I would uncover, then as the course unfolded, finding a lightness of being, deep relaxation and an opportunity to connect with the Divine. I was given tools for change that also taught me self-reliance. By the end of the three months, I observed a change in myself that is reflected also in the faces and eyes of the other participants - a softening, a lightness, an inner beauty. I am left with a feeling of gratitude, a deeper knowing of who I am and much broader understanding of yoga.
